What, then has Christ acquired with His suffering? …that through Christ’s wounds we were made whole. Therefore, St. Bernard correctly states that Christ’s suffering is of the greatest consequence; for just as the death of the saint is precious to the Lord, Psalm 116, how much more will not the death of this most holy, innocent Son of God be precious to Him. This element must threaded through the entire passion history, for the kernel and beneficial contemplation of the passion is embodied in it. Thus Christ’s soul was grieved unto death so that we might rejoice forever. Christ sweated bloody sweat and struggled in the throes of death so that we need never despair in the agony of death.
